Medieval
and Modern History: -
The
name Daman is most likely gotten from the Daman Ganga River, while Diu is from
the Sanskrit word dvipa, signifying "island." From Mauryan times
(fourth second century BCE), both were dependent upon different nearby and
territorial forces administering in western India. In the thirteenth century
Daman framed piece of the Ramnagar state, which at that point turned into a
tributary of the Gujarat rulers. Thus, various administrations in Kathiawar
(Saurashtra) administered Diu until it tumbled to the king of Gujarat in the
mid fifteenth century.
The
Portuguese obtained Daman and Diu as a major aspect of their stupendous
structure to control the exchange of the Indian Ocean. In 1535, under a bargain
with Sultan Bahādur Shah of Gujarat, the Portuguese assembled a stronghold at
Diu, a significant port on the prospering business and journey courses among
India and the Middle East. By the mid-1550s all Gujarati ships entering and
leaving the Gulf of Khambhat (Cambay) ports were required to call at Diu to pay
Portuguese obligations. In Diu the Portuguese developed a Jesuit school, which
was changed over into the great Cathedral of Sé Matriz about the turn of the
seventeenth century; the house of prayer stays a milestone today.
Eminent
for its harbours and shipbuilding yards, Daman (referred to in Portuguese as
Damão) was vanquished by the Portuguese in 1559. Both Daman and Diu were
dependent upon the representative general of Goa as a major aspect of the
Portuguese abroad region Estado da India (State of India). They stayed under
Portuguese guideline for over four centuries, however the decay of the
Portuguese domain in Asia extraordinarily decreased their key noteworthiness.
Daman and Diu made due as stations of A Portuguese abroad area until 1961, when
they turned out to be a piece of India.
